Yes the rumours are true: I’m off the drink for February as part of Feb Fast. This means no after work drinks, no cheeky cocktails and certainly no late night martinis. The gin stock of Melbourne is safe until March 1st.
Bradley and I, along with some staff members from Portello Rosso and Murmur are taking part in the event in order to raise money for organisations providing support, re-education and counselling for young Australians tackling serious alcohol and drug issues (including the Youth Support and Advocacy Service here in Victoria).
If you’d like to donate, you can do so online here: https://secure4.everydayhero.com.au/its_a_pr_nghtmare/donate
Donations are tax deductible (woohoo!) and you know, it’ll make you feel good supporting these community services.
A little about febfast for those who don’t know…
Let the febfast 2012 challenge begin!
It’s not easy to send the grog on holiday and temptation can lurk behind every fridge door. But if you can press the pause button not only will you feel healthier, you can also support thousands of young Australians.
Every day kids as young as 13 are struggling to overcome alcohol and drug addiction. Money from febfast goes to community services throughout Australia who provide support, mentoring, counselling and training. Donate to febfast and minimise the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs on our community.
Only 29 days to go…

I’m not one for New Years Resolutions. Last year my ‘resolution’ was to keep my work email inbox empty, or at most one page so that I didn’t have to scroll down. Not exactly saving the world or self improvement, but it was manageable and actually helped negate some 2am ‘I forgot to respond I need to do this I need to do that’ anxiety.
So no, resolving to loose 10kgs or to learn a new language are not my sort of goals. Cue 2012: 52 breakfast dates.
When Bradley and I first started dating we would meet every weekend for breakfast at a cafe, roughly half way between his place and mine. Eventually we moved in together and the breakfast dates were maintained while we still both worked in hospitality and had roughly the same working schedule.
Slowly the breakfast dates became fortnightly, then monthly. We would do breakfast at home but really, that’s not so much a date as sitting at the same table.
So enter 2012 and each weekend I plan on going out on a breakfast, brunch or some other food related date, and not doubling up on cafes. 52 different establishments please and thank you. Of course, I can visit the same place twice, but it doesn’t count in the grand scheme of 52. Brunswick can easily accommodate 52 breakfast spots, but I’m hoping for a bit of enthusiasm to venture out to surrounding locales.
1 - A Minor Place - 7th January 2012 - New York style bagel with avocado, dukkah, fresh lemon, cream cheese and roquette.
2 - Milkwood - 15th January 2012 - Sourdough toast with two poached eggs, smoked salmon and avocado smash
3 - Albert St Food & Wine - 28th January 2012 - We actually arrived just past breakfast cut off (boo) so had lunch. Albert St steak tartare, sardines on grilled bread with capers, currants and pine nuts, and the Albert St special - pizza with roasted peppers, pork and fennel sausage and mozzarella. Service started off slow, but became much more attentive. Food was delicious and I would definitely recommend going back and grazing through the menu. The wine store adjacent has a great selection of local and international wines for (I think) very reasonable prices. Definitely one to check out.

Elegance doesn’t mean being noticed, it means being remembered.

V Arc is an Australian interior design and architectural company focused on delivering creative and innovative design solutions with a ‘can do’ attitude. Partnering with Property Logic and FDC Building + Construction, V Arc have recently completed an unconventional fit out for the iSelect team with a real wow factor.
The 4800sqm site, split across three levels, marries contemporary design practices and space planning with clear design drivers: design an environment that is fun, quirky and gives back to the staff, and create an environment that is professional yet entertaining – promoting social interaction throughout the entire fit out.
iSelect is a young company that is experiencing rapid growth as consumers increasingly go online to find better solutions for their household products and services. Having selected a new site in Bay Road, Cheltenham, V Arc established the workplace goals and aspirations and set about designing a new home for the company.
With a rich culture, young and vibrant staff demographic, there was a requirement for lots of meeting rooms and collaboration spaces but not much storage. With these as our “iSelect principles” V Arc sought to integrate a variety of fun environments throughout the work zones. V Arc wanted something to be discovered at every turn, to encourage people to explore their environment and use spaces in ways they perhaps had not considered before.
iSelect embraced ‘out there’ design solutions and really supported out of the box thinking. In that respect iSelect and V Arc were a perfect match. V Arc aimed to flip the concept of what a call centre is on its head, and create a working environment that was not only striking but fostered communication between staff across all departments and levels and promoted their achievements.
The Front of House makes use of the iSelect corporate colours, orange and white. With stark white epoxy floors and bold splashes of orange, the front of house has a number of quirky spaces including the round “interrogation room” and white internal stair which was part of the design brief to ensure great vertical integration throughout the floors.
